Outdoor Adventures in Bedford County

Mural

As you drive into Bedford County, rolling hills and quiet backroads unfold around you, and the rush of everyday life fades as the slower pace and peaceful scenery make it instantly clear you’ve come to a different kind of place. As an outdoor-focused travel content creator who loves discovering Pennsylvania’s hidden gems, I’m always eager to explore the spots that make each destination unique.

Nestled in the heart of the Alleghenies, Bedford County boasts some of the state’s most scenic covered bridges, inviting state parks, picturesque hiking and biking trails, and even natural mineral springs that have drawn visitors for centuries. No matter your age or ability, there’s an outdoor adventure waiting for you here.

Covered Bridges

As a covered bridge enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn Bedford County is home to 14 historic covered bridges, each with its own story and charm. Scattered across the county’s rolling hills and quiet backroads, these beautifully preserved bridges offer a glimpse into the area’s past and the charm of rural Pennsylvania.

The Bedford County Covered Bridge Driving Tour features nine of these bridges, guiding visitors along a scenic route through countryside views, charming villages, and peaceful creek crossings. Among them, the Hall’s Mill Covered Bridge stands out for its picturesque setting over Yellow Creek and its well-preserved Burr Truss design, which reflects the craftsmanship of the late 19th century

State Parks

There’s a state park for everyone in Bedford County. Whether you’re looking for challenging hikes, peaceful picnics, or scenic water views, the county’s three state parks offer something special for every outdoor lover. As part of my personal quest to hike in all 124 Pennsylvania state parks, Bedford County’s parks have quickly become some of my favorites — each offering unique trails and experiences that showcase the region’s natural beauty.

Blue Knob State Park, home to Pennsylvania’s second highest peak, offers sweeping mountain views and trails that range from family-friendly strolls to heart-pumping climbs. The Mountain View Trail offers a scenic climb alongside a peaceful creek, leading hikers through varied forest terrain to breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Visitors won’t want to miss the Pavia Lookout, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the expansive Allegheny Mountains.

Biking in Bedford County PA

For those seeking a bit more adventure, Blue Knob features cross-country ski trails and mountain biking paths, while the nearby Blue Knob Resort offers downhill skiing, making the area a true four-season destination for outdoor fun.

With options for all ages and abilities, Shawnee State Park is a great place to enjoy outdoor time together, whether you’re paddling on the lake, having a picnic, or exploring the trails. The Lake Shore Trail offers an easy, scenic walk along the water’s edge, perfect for strollers and casual hikers alike. The Colvin Trail is also an easy hike, leading visitors to one of the oldest covered bridges in the county, the Colvin Covered Bridge. It’s the perfect mix of forest scenery and historic charm.

One of my favorite things about Warriors Path State Park is the unforgettable drive into the park, winding through a beautiful canopy of trees that sets the tone for a peaceful visit. Once inside, the park offers about three miles of easy hiking trails, perfect for leisurely exploration. Anglers will appreciate the excellent fishing opportunities along the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. A 1.7-mile paved extension of the Huntingdon & Broad Top Rail Trail now reaches the park, extending the entire trail to over 13 miles from the park to Tatesville, providing a longer route for hikers and cyclists.

Hiking And Biking Trails

Beyond the state parks, Bedford County has plenty of additional hiking and biking trails that highlight the area’s natural beauty.

The Omni Bedford Springs Resort, known for its mineral springs and historic charm, offers a network of well maintained trails perfect for guests and visitors looking to explore the beautiful grounds. These trails range from easy walks through the woods to more challenging hikes that reward adventurers with stunning views. Lewis’ Loop is a new ADA-accessible bike trail created to give more people the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

The Shuster Way Heritage Trail starts right at the resort and offers a pleasant, leisurely route into downtown Bedford. Stretching about four miles, the trail leads all the way to Old Bedford Village, with several interesting stops along the way where visitors can take in local history and charming sights. I took advantage of the Ride and Roam Package offered at Tally Ho Outfitters, and it was such a fun way to explore the Heritage Trail and downtown Bedford.

The Haunting Beauty Of The Abandoned Turnpike

 Tunnel

One of Bedford County’s most unique adventures is exploring the Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike, an 8.5-mile stretch of old highway between Breezewood and Sideling Hill. Its flat, easy-to-walk terrain makes it accessible to almost everyone, while the long tunnels create a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. Inside, the air feels cool and still, footsteps echo against the concrete walls, and darkness stretches far ahead, so bringing a flashlight is essential.

Colorful graffiti bursts from the walls in unexpected places, turning the abandoned roadway into a gallery of bold, surprising art. Every step through the tunnel is quiet and memorable, making the experience unforgettable.

With its peaceful trails, historic charm, and beautiful springs, Bedford County has a way of slowing you down and leaving a lasting impression. I can’t wait to come back.
